“Be Like Mike”

READ THIS!

Did you know a study cited Sports Illustrated’s 2011 list of the 50 highest-earning American athletes. Not a single female appeared on this list. Not to mention, the US women won 58 medals, a tally better than the overall medal count for all but three countries (China, Russia, Britain) participating in the games. You might think the endorsement deals for these impressive female athletes are a sure bet. They are not. This article talks about why female athletes can’t land successful endorsement deals. This article posses the question, “Were popular female athletes possibly endorsing the wrong products or allowing themselves to be miscast in contemporary advertising?”  Why is it so hard for a female athlete to have a successful endorsement deal without posing provocatively as sex symbols? I highly recommend reading this article, it makes a lot of good points!!

Alabama Fan gets 2 years

READ THIS!

One Alabama fan takes celebrating the BCS title too far. This man exposed his genitals and perform a simulated sex act on an unconscious man at the restaurant in front of a crowd of other Alabama fans. This “celebration” was caught on tape and went viral on the internet. What was probably just a drunk harmless joke turned into a huge lawsuit. In order to get less time he is being encouraged to register as a sex offender, which will stay with him for the rest of his life.  Certainly, this behavior is unacceptable but both parties were intoxicated. The unconscious man would have never known if it wasn’t caught on tape. I’m not condoning this behavior, i’m just pointing out that man he did this too was passed out. In other words, if your going to drink to the point you pass out drunk you should take some responsibility for putting yourself in danger. If this Alabama man were to be fined or get community service hours i think that would sufice, but up to 2 years in prison and to register as a sex offender is completely blown out of proportion.

US Open Lends a Helping Hand

READ THIS!

In addition to the NYC marathon racers the U.S. Tennis Association is lending a helping hand! Yesterday, they donated $300,000 worth of supplies such as clothing, bottled water and soap, along with $100,000 in cash, to  Sandy relief efforts!!!! We need to acknowledge all the different associations that add to the relief efforts! Hopefully these efforts from the NY marathon and US Tennis Association will lead the way, encouraging more and more people to help out!!!

NY Marathon Canceled?

READ THIS!!! What these 600 or so runners did was spectacular!!!! Their efforts not only are inspiring but they also truly exemplify what America is all about. When the marathon was called off because of the danger of the aftermath of the storm, people put their own personal welfare aside and showed up to give a helping hand. Everyone needs to read this so they can know and appreciate the country we live in. As Obama said in his thank you to all first responders, although the aftermath of hurricane Sandy leaves us with lots of devastation, it certainly has brought the best out people. We should all follow the lead of the runners and find a way to help the relief efforts!

The Lockout Continues

As the lockout reaches its seventh week, a full-82 game schedule looks unlikely. NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman says “Sure, you can play an abbreviated season. I would rather play a full season, and I am sure our fans would rather we play a full season, that’s why we made the offer we did. That was our fourth offer against really one offer from the union in all the time that we’ve been negotiating from the summer. We very much want to play and we’re very disappointed that we’re not.” If the NHL truly wanted a season, or cared one iota about their fans, employees, or anyone else, they would have negotiated a lot sooner and would continue to negotiate to the present day without cancelling a single game. This could potentially be the second lockout in less than 10 years. Perhaps the NHL would be in better hands with a different commissioner and not Gary Bettman.

3 Reasons You May Not Know

Here are 3 reasons why the lockout may last longer than you think…

1) Player have gone overseas to play.

2) Signing bonuses will still be paid by the team during the lockout. All signing bonuses are guaranteed money so they cannot be withheld from the players.

3)Escrow Accounts, last season the players put 8.5% of their paychecks into an escrow account. While they will not be receiving their normal checks throughout the season they will get 8% of their salary from last year back from the escrow account. This means unlike the NFL and NBA lockouts earlier this year, the players will have plenty of money coming their way early on.

Holy Photoshop!

Louisiana State University football fans were outraged after the school digitally erased the tiny crosses they painted on their chests at a recent football game. “We don’t want to imply we are making any religious or political statements, so we air-brushed it out,” the school said in a statement. “Only one of the students, who didn’t appreciate it, actually contacted us about it. So next time, we’ll just choose a different photo.” I would like to know, was it really necessary to airbrush the crosses out? Who is this really hurting? I don’t believe people would affiliate the fan’s crosses with the school making a religious or political statement. It seems as though the school just ended up offending its own students. I believe people need to embrace advocation. Schools shouldn’t ignore or avoid people who want to wear symbols that represent their own personal beliefs in fear of affiliation. For example, Hudson Taylor wore a Human Rights sticker on his wresting headgear he became a national LGBT ally. After wearing the headgear, he was encouraged to start his program, Athlete Ally, with the mission of “educating, encouraging and empowering straight athlete allies to combat homophobia and transphobia in sports.” He travels to schools all over giving talks to encourage people to be allies. What if the University of Maryland photoshopped the Human Rights sticker on his headgear? Or The University of Maryland told Hudson that he wasn’t allowed to wear  the sticker because The University of Maryland did not want to people to think they were making a political or religious statement? Point blank, advocating beliefs should be welcomed and encouraged regardless of what it is and the persons whereabouts.
